Turkey is often the first stop for many journalists who no longer work in their home countries because of authoritarian governments or war. Media organizations and foreign journalists have built a base in Istanbul to work from exile. Hear from journalists in person and the challenges they face reporting about their homelands.
Moderator:
Fariba Nawa is an Istanbul-based freelance journalist and host of On Spec, an independent documentary podcast from the field. She has reported from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Egypt, Iran, Central Asia, and has been working in Turkey for the last decade. She’s the author of Opium Nation and co-author of The American Way: Stories of Invasion.
Panelists
Christian Feiland – Freelance journalist and Co-Founder of Foreigner Media Association, Istanbul – Turkey / Germany. His extensive experience in media includes roles such as TV journalist, cameraman, director, and PR advisor at Frame34.com, a company specializing in film, broadcast, TV & video production, social media, and internet videos.
Susanna Inkinen – Advisor – IMS, Denmark – Susanna is a journalist, documentarist and media advisor covering for International Media Support – IMS.
Narges Keshavarznia – Miaan Group – Researcher and former journalist – Iran. Her work is divided into three main parts: gathering information and preparing reports on restrictive internet policies in Iran; informing about intentional internet disruptions caused by the government; and preparing educational materials and security tips for social and political activists to protect themselves against digital threats.
Kerem S. Nachar – Al Jamhuriya – Arab network – Syria. Karam is the executive editor and director of AlJumhuriya.net, an award-winning independent media platform that covers Syria and the Syrian diaspora.
Nataliya Vasilyeva – Journalist – Russia / Turkey – She was most recently the Jerusalem and the Istanbul correspondent for the Daily Telegraph newspaper. She covered Russia for the Associated Press and the Daily Telegraph from 2008 to 2022 when she had to flee her home country as the Kremlin introduced war censorship within days after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Noor Ahmad Yurttash – Freelance Journalist – based in Istanbul for 6 years. In Afghanistan, he worked as the head of Uzbek news at Ayna TV, Faryab National Radio, TV Maimana FM and Aqyol newspaper. He is the founder and chairman of Uzbekpda TV. He is also secretary general of the Turkestan Hands Education. Furthermore, he reports as a freelance journalist for Bbco.
After the panel, we will have as well a video screening with a short video by Omid Idrak about the vision of migrants in Istanbul and a session about Sufism literature by Najib Sharifi from the Afghan Journalists Safety Committee.

Memento as a term for artistic discourse shall serve to perceive absences and offer ways to inhale and exhale memory to avoid the acceptance of neglect. Mahalla Memento aims to create a new vision of tomorrow by asking artists to work on the everyday life of the overlooked.
The artists are free to use any artistic form or style. Innovative interpretations of the leitmotif are appreciated.
