Sufism in today’s Afghanistan remains a fundamental and resilient force, offering a sanctuary of spiritual solace amid the tumult of ongoing unrest and socio-political challenges.
While the country has experienced profound upheaval, Sufi practices continue to resist the extensive threats and offer a platform for Afghans to perform mystical rituals in search of attaining proximity to the divine. The poetic works of revered Sufi mystics, such as Rumi, Bidel and Hafez, echo through the voices of Afghan poets and Sufi practitioners, nurturing a collective yearning for peace and unity.
Additionally, in the face of increasing dogma and bigotry, Sufism’s emphasis on love, tolerance, and inner spirituality offers an alternative path that resonates with many Afghans seeking a path of compassion and understanding in their daily lives. This session explores the evolution of Sufism in Afghanistan throughout history with an emphasis on the state of affairs since the onset of conflicts four decades ago.
