Workshop by Katharina Swoboda
Location: Büyük Valide Han
Saturday 13.09.2025
5:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Glitter is Joy, glitter sparkles. Based on her work with glitter, Katharina Swoboda was offering a photography workshop on Saturday, September 13, during the opening ceremony of Midas Touch at the Büyük Valide Han.
In the workshop, the Midas Touch was reimagined. Instead of turning objects into gold, touch was staged through the scattering of blue glitter. Flash photography captured these brief, luminous instants of contact and dispersal. From the resulting sequence, one image was chosen, printed on site with a photo printer, and given to visitors as a personal keepsake – an impermanent treasure that resists accumulation.
We were very pleased, to present the photography workshop Glitter is Joy by Katharina Swoboda in Istanbul in cooperation with the Austrian Cultural Forum, Istanbul.
Katharina Swoboda (b. 1984) is a media artist whose practice investigates the intersections of nature, culture, and media. Her works have been shown in institutions including Akademie Graz (2024), Kunsthaus Graz (2022), Kunstraum Niederösterreich (2021), and Kunsthalle Karlsplatz (2021). She is currently engaged in her PEEK project Straying as Research (2024–2028), which expands her artistic inquiry into the concept of straying. In 2024, she presented her video work Glitter at Akademie Graz.
Photographs and videos will be taken at the event for use on our website and social media, and in the press, and other marketing materials and publications. By entering this event, you consent to the photographing, filming and using your image for these purposes.
Midas Touch
Under the title Midas Touch this year’s Mahalla Festival is calling for a confrontation with the dystopian reality of a growth-based global economy
that ignores the threats of climate change, increasing international armed conflicts and forced migration.
Mahalla Midas Touch is dedicated to give a voice to the vulnerable, excluded, unseen and to revert vulnerability into strength. Questioning narratives appears through individual, collaborative and corresponding artistic works in a historical Set-up in Istanbul inviting for site-specific interventions.
In cooperation with:
The MagiC Carpets platform, a Creative Europe program supported by the European Union.
