What Has Man Made of Man?

Artwork and Performance by Tbel Abuseridze

Location: Büyük Valide Han

September 14th – 28th

daily – 1:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Tbel Abuseridze’s work oscillates between the documentary and the experimental, weaving together the observational precision of photography with conceptual gestures that expand its boundaries. Rooted in a sensitivity to place and community, his practice delves into contemporary processes both intimate and collective, personal and political.

For Midas Touch, Tbel Abuseridze will create a project developed at Büyük Valide Han during his one-month residency in cooperation with MagiC Carpets platform. Drawing on the living memory of the building — its craftsmen, workers, and transient inhabitants — he will transform their traces into cyanotypes. These alchemical transfers will be imprinting images and archives onto materials found in and around the Han: cloth, glass, ceramics, and other surfaces that carry the building’s history.

In this process, photography moves beyond simple recording. Images are no longer fixed on paper but seep into fragile vessels, carrying with them the layered stories of the Han.

This transformation recalls the Midas Myth in reverse: not everything turns to gold, but instead what remains is the tenderness of human touch, the trace of presence pressed into things.

Tbel Abuseridze is a Georgian multimedia artist based in Tbilisi. He continually seeks new ways to reimagine visual storytelling through a balance of immediacy and experiment.
