Disrupted Time

Multimedia Artwork by Ieva Kotryna Ski

Location: Büyük Valide Han

September 14th – 28th

daily – 1:00 pm – 7:00 pm

For the Mahalla Festival 2025 and its theme Midas Touch, Ieva Kotryna Ski is creating an installation developed during her residency in Istanbul ahead of the festival. Ieva Kotryna is exploring the concept of disrupted time, drawing inspiration from the local context and the notion of deep time to reflect on the fragile experience of a fleeting moment. In a world driven by acceleration and overproduction, one is left with a desire to break the arrow of the clock.

Using sound, video, and found materials, she will inhabit the echoing spaces of Büyük Valide Han — a living body of stone and dust where recordings, glitches, and images carry forgotten stories. Through the layering of digital technology and site-specific sensitivity, her work proposes a poetics of attention — where transformation arises not from control, but from an open exchange with this world.

Ieva Kotryna Ski’s practice moves between material fragility and digital resonance, tracing the fractures where documentary and fiction meet. Emerging from an early exploration of mobile phone aesthetics — glitches, fragments, the fleeting every day — her recent works expand into a broader meditation on geological processes, environmental transformations, and the unstable surfaces of perception. Stones folded by time, images disrupted by error, landscapes that tremble with human and nonhuman histories: these thresholds form the ground of her inquiry.

Ieva Kotryna Ski’s residency and the creation of the new project will be developed at Büyük Valide Han in Istanbul in cooperation with the MagiC Carpets platform.
