San Lawrenz

San Lawrenz is an administrative unit of Malta, on the island of Gozo. The Dwejra nature reserve is administratively part of the town. Prominent in the reserve is the Fungus Rock, and formerly also the Azure Window landmark before its collapse on March 8, 2017.

The village has retained its traditional and rural lifestyle.

Dwejra Tower

Dwejra Tower is a small watchtower in Dwejra Bay, San Lawrenz, which is on the island of Gozo. This tower, together with the others, was meant to act as a watchtower and guard the surrounding areas from corsair landings.

The tower was restored by Din l-Art Ħelwa between 1997 and 1999. It is now in good condition and is open to the public at no charge.

The area around the Dwejra Tower is the main venue of Beyond What Drifts Us Apart and the Mahalla Festival 2024.

The artworks will break down the notion that the watch tower and the area around is a bastion of defence. In this century, it isn’t. The environment should be!

The artists will produce side – specific works on the area around the watch tower and inside the tower.

Performances, Installations and Workshops will be organized. All of them are interactive and open to participation for free. The festival will maintain a busy online presence. Activities are local, but our dialogue is global.
