Ona Juciute participated into the Mahalla Festival in the frame of parallel events of the 17th Istanbul Biennial as participant of the artist of residency network by the MagiC Carpets platfrom.
She has dealt intensively with the school and the memories of the school in her installation Guest.
She did a research about the history and memories of the Greek School and the Kurtuluş district with talks and interviews, among others with Ömer Koçak who worked 4 decades as building supervisor for the school and the director of the football club of Kurtuluş – Dino Belalidis – who was student at the school 2 decades ago. Ona Juciute created out of this research a touching installation in one of the classrooms with the existing furniture and small ad on.
The title, Palimpsest, originally denotes a piece of writing material on which the original writing has been erased to make room for later writing.
However, traces of the overwritten texts remain.
This paleographic phenomenon will inspire the artists of the Mahalla Festival 2022. They will be concerned with the use of resources in a
comprehensive way: in terms of ecological, economic, political, social and communal memory culture.
