[ QALET MARKU TOWER ]

Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq

Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq is an urban village in Malta situated between the limits of Madliena, Magħtab, Għargħur and Pembroke. The area is situated at the mouth of the island’s longest valley called ‘Wied il-Kbir’. The name Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq in Maltese can be translated to the meaning ‘sea of pebbles’ in English.

Qalet Marku Tower

Situated on Malta’s picturesque North coast, in the area of Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq, Qalet Marku tower is the third of thirteen watchtowers constructed during the reign of Grandmaster De Redin. Dating back to 1658, it was built to give warning of approaching pirate ships which were rife in Maltese waters at the time.

Installation / Exhibition / Performance / Workshop

The peninsula around the Qalet Marku Tower is the main venue of Beyond What Drifts Us Apart and the Mahalla Festival 2023.

The artworks will break down the notion that the watch tower and the area around is a bastion of defense. In this century, it isn’t. The environment will/should be!

The artists will produce side – specific works on the peninsula around the watch tower.

Performances, Installations and Workshops will be organized. All of them are interactive and open to participation. The festival will maintain a busy online presence. Activities are local, but our dialogue is global.

We will update the Mahalla Festival website regular with the details. So check out often.
