Ayla Jean Yackley features artistic positions around the refugee crisis in the frame of the 15th Istanbul Biennial on Al-monitor. The works of Volkan Aslan, Olaf Metzel, Mahmoud Obaidi and Victor Leguy are the focus of Yackleys descriptions of migration-topics in the official program of the Biennial. The exhibition “Welcome to Homeland” by Halil Altındere and the Mahalla Festival are mentioned as central activities of the Biennial’s Parallel events.
Palimpsest
The title, Palimpsest, originally denotes a piece of writing material on which the original writing has been erased to make room for later writing.
However, traces of the overwritten texts remain.
This paleographic phenomenon will inspire the artists of the Mahalla Festival 2022. They will be concerned with the use of resources in a
comprehensive way: in terms of ecological, economic, political, social and communal memory culture.
