MagiC Carpets Annual Meeting

Malta November 27th – December 1st

Unfinished Art Space in cooperation with Diyalog Dernegi organized the MagiC Carpets annual meeting of platform members 2023 in Malta between November 27th and December 1st.

On the occasion of the meeting,  Beyond What Drifts Us Apart curated by Curator Elyse Tonna was launched, a project of the Mahalla Festival in cooperation with Unfinished Art Space.

Magic Carpets partners were thrilled to meet for their annual projects-info-exchange, hosted at the Malta Society of Arts. The platform members and partners met in beautiful Malta for brainstorming and networking sessions, as well as to catch up with the residency projects across Europe.

November 30th marked the Emerging Curators training session, an event which is a part of a 3-year-long program focused on providing dedicated curators a space to learn, share and meet colleagues. Until the 1st of December, the curators and platform partners discussed communication practices, community involvement and co-creation practices. Workshops with Fluxus Labas! (LT), Latica Mladina (HR) and Tonik UK accompanied the inspiring program.

The partners of the platform visited spaces of the contemporary art scenes in Malta: the Mill is an Art, Culture and Crafts Centre founded by Gabriel and Mary Rose Caruana, run today by the Gabriel Caruana Foundation.  Rosa Kwir is an independent art space founded by the artists Romeo Roxmann Gatt and Charlie Cauchi, which serves as an archive revolving around alternative notions of gender.

With the various workshops, reflection sessions and studio visits, emerging curators reflected on the second year projects and on personal development, discussed practices of co-creation and its benefits for community building and reviewed methods used and challenges faced while working with artists and communities in public space.

A big hooray to the artists and organisations we’ve visited and met in Malta.
